Lighting up a new flame?

On several fronts, Venu Srinivasan of TVS has decided to take on Rajiv Bajaj of Bajaj Auto. It’s the former’s bid to emerge as the No. 2 player in the two-wheeler segment. By karan mehrishi

When M.K. Stalin, the son of DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi, and a few other paragons of politics visit a corporate event, it becomes an emotional affair in Tamil Nadu. As we arrived at the Chennai Trade Centre, the venue of TVS Motor press conference, we realised that this wasn’t the usual glitzy event. This special event on March 9, 2008, had ‘unanticipated’ special invitees, which included hundreds of auto rickshaw drivers and their families. And it seemed more unexpected, when Stalin and Venu Srinivasan, CMD, TVS Motor Company, sat in an auto rickshaw and posed for the press photographers.

The event not only invited the auto rickshaw fraternity, referred to as ‘the chauffeurs of middle-class Indians’, but also doubled as an exaltation ceremony for honouring their bravery and selfless service towards society. There were special schemes and insurance programmes announced by TVS for these unsung heroes, a cause which has not been addressed yet......Continue

Guarding your life

Question. Which is the sexiest profession in the world? As many possible candidates race through your mind, I have just one word for you, Baywatch! Forget for a second the image of Pamela Anderson running on the beach in her barely-there bikini and concentrate on the hard facts. Finely-chiselled bodies, six packs (abs not beer), and a sun-kissed look, these are a given when you happen to be a lifeguard. Add to that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and the added perk of seeing members of the opposite sex in various stages of undress, all day long, and whatever alternatives you might have had simply fade away. The icing on the cake is definitely the element of heroism that the general public accords the lifeguards. And rightly so, as most oft en it’s these people whose presence of mind and timely response makes the difference between life and death.

That’s (Alu)minimum value!

Expensive metal (and we’re not talking of gold here!) is the hot & melting topic for the season in Canada. Well, you’d want to believe it’s so at least at Alcan Inc., the Canadian aluminium giant, where the shareholders apparently hold a Tom Albanese, CEO, Rio Tinto & his dream of making a base metal...view that ‘what if it’s not gold they own? Atleast their aluminium is worth its weight in gold!’ Yes, they firmly believe so, for they wouldn’t otherwise brush aside Alcoa’s colossal $26.9 billion revised bid offer & ask for more… But then again, the obvious happened & the Alcan shareholders didn’t have to wait for long, for along came Rio Tinto, the world’s second largest mining behemoth with its all-cash $38.1 billion mighty offer at $101 per Alcan share. ‘Overvalued’ you think as compared to the previous bids it received from Alcoa? Our confident answer to that is – yes! Grossly overvalued!

Brand : Surf Excel

Agency : Lowe
Baseline : Daag achcha hain

Description: A bunch of little boys are playing cricket. They go through the motions of the Indian cricket team: Expressions, dives, leaps, celebrations, et al. All through, they get nicely muddied and dirty. In the end, the voiceover says that ‘daag’ is ‘achcha’ if it means that these guys have a chance of winning the World Cup in 2015.

4Ps Take: Surf Excel plays on the ‘Daag achcha hain’ line yet again and not for a moment does the positioning flag! Yet again, here’s another brand that is making good use of Team India’s ouster from the World Cup and is looking ahead for bigger and better things. The USP of the ad is obviously the now-trusted ‘daag achche hain’ catch-line. The power idea is to reinforce the brand’s message. The communication uses a brood of extremely cute kiddos – and the message should hit home nicely to the mommies. Quite a sixer from Surf Excel!

IBM: Bursting with Ideas!

Anew outsourcing wave has hit the telecom sector in India and all eyes are now on IBM. Most major telecom operators have partnered with or are planning to partner IBM to secure operational efficiencies. Bharti Airtel was the first to hook up with Big Blue, followed more recently by Aditya Birla Group’s Idea Cellular. Now, IBM is also talking to Reliance Communications & Vodafone (Hutchison Essar), the other big players who are looking to hook up with the IT major.

The ten year deal with Idea is expected to draw in a quantum of business pegged at around $600 to $800 million. Says Rajat Mukarji, Head- Corporate Affairs, Idea Cellular, “The pact with IBM will enable Idea meet the needs of its 14 million current subscribers & future growth through supporting end-to-end transformation of business critical processes including billing, revenue assurance & credit collection, subscriber management, business intelligence, fraud management, customer relationship management, e-billing & payment, and customer self-care.”

It’s tough to charge you premiums for making calls nowadays with the cutthroat battle for market shares in the Indian telecom sector.

It’s tough to charge you premiums for making calls nowadays with the cutthroat battle for market shares in the Indian telecom sector. As a logical follow through, companies are looking for attractive avenues to improve their ARPUS, and it is here that mobile VAS services come to the rescue. According to a recent report by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the VAS industry in India is estimated at Rs.28.5 billion and is expected to grow by 60% to touch Rs.45.6 billion by the end of 2007.

It’s the right time to exploit all emerging opportunities in the mobile communications space. Sanjiv Mittal, CEO, Bharti Telesoft (VAS division of Bharti Enterprises Group), elucidates, “Th e main opportunity is the vast amount of content that can be delivered via mobile. The key is to collect that broad range of content and ensure it can be packaged and delivered in a meaningful & appealing way to individual subscribers and subscriber segments.”

Connecting the world @ 95 paise

If calling anywhere in India at Re.1 is cheap, then what is calling any part of the globe at 95 paise? World Phone Internet Services Private Limited has introduced World Phone cards in India (along with 30 other nations) which will significantly bring down the cost of making international calls. From now on, internet users in the country can make international calls from their computers using the Internet telephony network. Just like mobile recharge cards, World Phone’s internet calling cards would be available to the users in denominations of Rs.250, Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 with a validity of 100 days. Along with making international calling very affordable, this service also aims to curb the rising illegal internet telephony in the world.
