So how long will it take for Bharti Retail – with Wal-Mart in tow – to start shops in India? The information in the market is that the retail venture is on track – and is likely to start early next year. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Bharti Group Chairman and CEO, recently back from the US (where he met Wal-Mart Vice Chairman Mike Duke), told journalists in New Delhi that, “The process is going as per the plan and we are looking at a cluster of stores by early 2008... you will see half-a-dozen coming up.” The branding of the project is still being worked out with Wal-Mart. “Legal issues like brand agreement, franchise arrangement may take some time, but we are going ahead as per the plan,” Mittal added. It has already been decided that Bharti will manage the frontend, while Wal-Mart would provide back-end and logistics support.
