Brown is sincerely trying to shed the ‘poodle’ tag attached to the British, made amply clear by the observation of former UN Deputy Secretary & the current Foreign Minister, Malloch Brown, who candidly stated that Brown and Bush would not be “joined at the hip.” He further amplified the need to build coalitions, which “go beyond the bilateral blinkers of the normal partners.” But dismissing such statements as polemical, Robert McGeehan of Chatham House, told B&E, “Recent comments about ‘more distance’ could appease several critics in Britain, but the fact is that there shall be no major shift in the (USUK) relationship.”
However, distancing himself from Bush and getting rid of the Iraq war fiasco inflicted by Blair, could go a long way in ensuring Brown’s continued popularity.
