BAJAJ

In the midst of a family feud or corporate restructuring? You tell us...

Even as the demerger of the iconic Bajaj Group takes shape, the brand has found its rightful place in the 4Ps B&M list, with the able flank of its two great warriors, Bajaj Auto and Bajaj Capital.

BajajBAJAJ Auto, the fifth largest Indian company in terms of market cap today, was a tad late in sensing the demand shift from scooters to motorcycles. But at a motor show organized earlier this year you couldn’t really sense the delay, seeing the Pulsar roaring with its mammoth 200cc engine. Even their iconic brand – Bajaj Chetak (which served as a symbol of middle class aspirations for over four decades) was discontinued in 2006. Though hit hard on both sides by Honda Scooters and Hero Honda, the Pulsar continues to chart its way past the sales graph.

If Chetak spurned Bajaj to the top league between the 1970s-1990s, the job in this decade belongs to the Pulsar. “Bajaj as a brand presents a classic case of a dying scooter brand changing itself into a big bike brand today,” says K. V. Sridhar from Leo Burnett. Bajaj is betting next on CNG powered bikes, which will be launched soon. Definitely, the ‘Naye bharat ki nayi tasveer’. What say heir apparent, Rajiv Bajaj?

Si(n)gh of relief for DLF!

Pia SINGH... is adroitly leading her real estate chariot into uncharted growth territories. Competitors beware!

The booming real estate bears a gloomy picture of the fairer sex... perhaps with the exception of Pia Singh who has more than registered her presence in the real estate sector, that too in a flamboyant manner. For the uninitiated, before successfully leading the Pia SINGHDigital Talkies entertainment venture for the DLF Group, Pia worked for the risk underwriting department in GE Capital and also played an integral part in building the DLF Golf and Country Club. A graduate from the Wharton School and with a film-making course from New York University under her belt, Pia today sits pretty as the Director of DLF Universal & MD of DLF Retail. And with DLF dominating India’s real estate sector under the leadership of her legendary father KP Singh, Pia is all set to make the group an established retail player now.

As she explains, “DLF retail is well poised to capitalize on its strengths as a comprehensive solution provider in the entertainment and leisure segment by bringing best of quality, service, design and mall management skills into its retail operations.” With DT Cinemas, Pia has already ushered in a revolution in the recreation and entertainment arena and though the entertainment and retail sectors have witnessed a rise of many players, Pia is confident that DLF retail and Entertainment will soon make a mark of its own. With her ambitions firmly in place, this one’s on her way to take DFL to irresistibly greater heights.

Bharti Retail on track

So how long will it take for Bharti Retail – with Wal-Mart in tow –Sunil Bharti Mittal to start shops in India? The information in the market is that the retail venture is on track – and is likely to start early next year. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Bharti Group Chairman and CEO, recently back from the US (where he met Wal-Mart Vice Chairman Mike Duke), told journalists in New Delhi that, “The process is going as per the plan and we are looking at a cluster of stores by early 2008... you will see half-a-dozen coming up.” The branding of the project is still being worked out with Wal-Mart. “Legal issues like brand agreement, franchise arrangement may take some time, but we are going ahead as per the plan,” Mittal added. It has already been decided that Bharti will manage the frontend, while Wal-Mart would provide back-end and logistics support.

Guarding your life

Question. Which is the sexiest profession in the world? As many possible candidates race through your mind, I have just one word for you, Baywatch! Forget for a second the image of Pamela Anderson running on the beach in her barely-there bikini and concentrate on the hard facts. Finely-chiselled bodies, six packs (abs not beer), and a sun-kissed look, these are a given when you happen to be a lifeguard. Add to that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and the added perk of seeing members of the opposite sex in various stages of undress, all day long, and whatever alternatives you might have had simply fade away. The icing on the cake is definitely the element of heroism that the general public accords the lifeguards. And rightly so, as most oft en it’s these people whose presence of mind and timely response makes the difference between life and death.

Brown begins to assert the independence of British foreign policy

Brown is sincerely trying to shed the ‘poodle’ tag attached to the British, made amply clear by the observation of former UN Deputy Secretary & the current Foreign Minister, Stop pointing fi ngers & extend a helping hand to the worldMalloch Brown, who candidly stated that Brown and Bush would not be “joined at the hip.” He further amplified the need to build coalitions, which “go beyond the bilateral blinkers of the normal partners.” But dismissing such statements as polemical, Robert McGeehan of Chatham House, told B&E, “Recent comments about ‘more distance’ could appease several critics in Britain, but the fact is that there shall be no major shift in the (USUK) relationship.”

However, distancing himself from Bush and getting rid of the Iraq war fiasco inflicted by Blair, could go a long way in ensuring Brown’s continued popularity.
